Taxing stuff: Taxes draining global competitiveness

A 2012 article outlines calls by Liu Shaoyong, Chairman of China Eastern Airlines, for the government to inject ¥18-20 billion into the top three air carriers  (Southern Airlines Ltd, China Eastern Airlines Corp and Air China Ltd). It comes after the top three carriers paid a combined ¥15 billion in taxes in 2011 (almost an equal amount to their combined gross profits). Liu says the tax burdens have hurt the carriers' global competitiveness and believes the injection will shore up their competitiveness.
